The quake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, hit at 21:09 p.m. western Indonesian time off Nias, some 1,200 kilometers northwest of Jakarta, according to an official report on the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency website on Sunday.
The quake's epicenter was 63 kilometers southwest of Nias, and the tremor was also felt in the area of Medan, capital city of North Sumatra province, the report said.
On March this year, a 8.7-magnitude quake struck Nias and nearby islands off the western coast of North Sumatra, killing several hundred people.
The quake was the latest in a series of tremors to rattle Indonesia, located in the Pacific volcanic belt known as the "Ring of Fire", where earthquakes and volcanoes are commonplace. (***)
